What is it like to see a Non-Diet Dietitian?
The feeling you get when you finally see a non-diet dietitian who is trauma-informed
So you have maybe thought about seeing a dietitian or more specifically and non-diet Dietitian to talk about your relationship with food but, still feel unsure or even a little apprehensive?
Maybe your wondering;
Will they tell me to eat more? eat less? weigh me? measure my body?
The short answer - No, that’s not how we roll.
Let’s unpack this a little.
Feeling anxious about seeing a dietitian Is valid
Whether you're navigating eating disorder recovery, disordered eating patterns, or just seeking weight-inclusive nutrition care, it can feel vulnerable to open up to someone you don’t really know.
That apprehension? likely your body’s way of trying to keep you safe, especially if you have had any negative (or not so great) experiences with health professionals before. As a trauma-informed non-diet dietitian, my priority is your safety, autonomy, and consent.
Let me walk you through what a session with me might look like, so it feels a little less unknown.
What to Expect in a Non-Diet Nutrition Session
We don’t have to dive straight in.
I’ll introduce myself, answer any questions you have, and give a little overview of how my approach might look.
& I want to get to know you - what you enjoy doing, who you spend time with, if you have any animals?
And yes, you will probably meet Sia, my dog child who will likely be sleeping be on the couch next to my desk!
Then, I’ll gently ask what brought you here and what you’re hoping to get from our session together.
We may explore (only if you're okay with it):
Your relationship with food
Medical history
Medications, supplements, or anything else relevant to your care
What About Weight?
Here’s the honest truth: Weight is not the main character here 💣
In a non-diet and weight-inclusive approach, we focus on your lived experience, your values, and your needs - a number on the scale does not tell me that.
Yes, sometimes weight or medical measures (like blood tests, blood pressure) may be clinically relevant e.g in the case of medical instability or eating disorder monitoring for safe care - but what I will always do is explain why it is important.
You have the right to opt out, delay, or say no. Always.
When it comes to weight, this conversation is more than just a number. Because exactly that - it is a number and it does not dictate your health or worth. We are here to provide a brave space around weight talk. Because when we are dismantling diet talk or rules, weight and weight stigma is (and can be) a big part of that conversation.
What Else Might We Talk About?
If you're comfortable, we might chat through:
What a day and week of eating typically looks like for you
If you feel guilt or shame around food
Whether you experience urges to compensate (e.g. via exercise or restriction)
Hunger and fullness cues
Exercise and sleep habits
Digestive or gut symptoms (yes, even poop chat — it’s part of the job!)
This session is your space - we are not a food police interrogation.
We’re not here to judge, dictate, or hand you a meal plan.
We’re here to understand what’s going on for you and offer support that’s aligned with your needs and values.
What If It’s Not the Right Fit?
That’s okay. Really.
If it turns out that I’m not the best person to support you, I’ll be honest and help you find someone who is. You deserve care that actually supports your wellbeing and needs.
You Deserve Safe, Compassionate Care
If you’ve felt unheard, dismissed, or harmed by traditional nutrition or health approaches, I see you.
You deserve:
To be heard
To be seen
To feel supported, not shamed
Care that is trauma-informed, neuro-affirming, and rooted in compassionate, evidence-based, non-diet principles exists.
& I’d love to walk alongside you in that space.
With warmth,
Courtney & Sia 🐶
